Former Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya has been appointed as the interim head coach of the country’s national men’s cricket team.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) issued an official press release on Monday (July 8) announcing the development.
Jayasuriya, currently serving as the cricket consultant for SLC, will assume his new role immediately and has been appointed until the conclusion of Sri Lanka’s tour of England in September.
The legendary allrounder’s appointment follows the resignations of Chris Silverwood (head coach) and Mahela Jayawardene (consultant) after Sri Lanka’s disappointing T20 World Cup campaign.
Jayasuriya’s first task as interim head coach will be overseeing the three-match ODI and three-match T20I series against India starting on July 27.
CEO of SLC, Ashley de Silva, expressed confidence in Jayasuriya’s ability to stabilize Sri Lankan cricket moving forward.
“Sanath, with his extensive international cricketing experience, is well-equipped to lead the national team until a permanent solution is found,” stated de Silva in the official press release.
