Uncapped duo Kwena Maphaka and Jason Smith have been selected in South Africa’s squad for the upcoming T20I series against West Indies, which will feature three matches.

This marks South Africa’s first T20I appearance since their loss to India in the T20 World Cup final in Barbados in June.

Smith, who scored 291 runs at an average of 41.57 in the CSA T20 Challenge, also brings an additional pace option.

Maphaka, who played a crucial role in South Africa’s U19 World Cup campaign and featured for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, was named Player of the Tournament in the U19 World Cup with 21 wickets.

Several key players, including Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Quinton de Kock, and Heinrich Klaasen, were not considered for selection due to various reasons, as explained by Head Coach Rob Walter.

Nqaba Peter, who debuted in May, has been ruled out due to a shoulder injury.

Coach Walter emphasized the opportunity this series provides to develop the player pool while maintaining a core of experienced players and giving emerging talent exposure to quality international competition.
