Russell and Holder as well as Joseph have been rested for the T20Is against South Africa
After conceding the Test series 1-0, the West Indies will be without several key players for the upcoming three T20Is against South Africa at home.
Andre Russell has been rested upon request, as stated by Cricket West Indies on Sunday (August 18).
Following the West Indies’ failure to reach the semifinals of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup and his subsequent commitment to London Spirit in The Hundred 2024, Russell sought time off.
In addition to Russell, former captain Jason Holder has also been rested for workload management.
Holder has played five consecutive Tests, including series in England and the recent home series against South Africa.
Both Russell and Holder will collaborate with the CWI science and medicine team during their time off.
“Andre Russell requested a period of rest and recovery, as did Jason Holder, who played five back-to-back Tests against England and South Africa.
During this period, they will work closely with the CWI science and medicine team,” said Miles Bascombe, Director of Cricket.
Also absent from the squad is Alzarri Joseph, West Indies’ T20 World Cup vice-captain, who did not participate in the two-match Test series against South Africa.
Brandon King, sidelined since a side strain during West Indies’ Super Eight fixture against England in June, remains unavailable.
Roston Chase has been named deputy to Rovman Powell for the series.
Despite the absences, Shimron Hetmyer retains his place in the squad, though he last played a T20I in December 2023 against England.
Meanwhile, spin-bowling allrounder Fabian Allen returns to the team after missing the home World Cup.
Allen recently won the Lanka Premier League (LPL) with the Jaffna Kings in July.
“Facing a strong South African side is a great opportunity for our team to reset and refocus our game plan,” said head coach Daren Sammy.
“We have played them recently and had mixed results, so this series should be exciting and important.
I’m confident in the squad we’ve selected, and with the next T20 World Cup in 2026 in mind, I know the guys will be eager to demonstrate their hunger for success.”
All three T20Is will be held at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba and will be part of double-headers with the Women’s CPL 2024.
