Day three, often referred to as the “moving day” in Test cricket, saw the second match between West Indies and South Africa rush to an exciting conclusion, with the visitors securing a 40-run victory in Guyana, thereby winning the series 1-0.

Jayden Seales took six wickets, helping to bowl South Africa out early, leaving the hosts with a target of 263 runs.

However, Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj’s three-wicket hauls turned the game in South Africa’s favor.

Dane Piedt and Wiaan Mulder also contributed with two wickets each in a thrilling finish, as West Indies were bowled out for 222 in their chase.

A change of ball immediately shifted the momentum for West Indies, with Jomel Warrican striking in the first over of the day.

He trapped Wiaan Mulder LBW with an arm ball that stayed low, deceiving the batter who went deep into the crease.

Maharaj fell for a pair in the next over, chipping a Jayden Seales delivery to mid-wicket.

Seales then bowled Kyle Verreynne, completing his five-wicket haul as West Indies staged a remarkable comeback in the morning session.

Rabada was next to fall, edging to first slip, followed by Nandre Burger, who was caught off a reflex catch by Seales off his own bowling.

South Africa’s batting order collapsed, losing their last five wickets for just 23 runs, ending their innings at 246.

Chasing 263, Kraigg Brathwaite and Mikyle Louis began cautiously against Rabada and Burger, who maintained tight lines.

Brathwaite broke the shackles with a backfoot boundary through the covers off Burger, but Louis soon edged to Mulder at third slip, giving Rabada his first wicket.

Keacy Carty adopted a positive approach, driving an overpitched delivery from Burger through the covers.

Carty and Brathwaite kept the scoreboard ticking before Lunch, with West Indies at 43 for 1 at the break.

After Lunch, a poor delivery from Burger allowed Brathwaite to continue the flow of runs with a boundary off his pads.

Mulder, who had taken four wickets in the first innings, trapped Brathwaite LBW on 25 and struck again a few overs later, with Carty dragging one onto his stumps, signaling South Africa’s resurgence.

Kavem Hodge played aggressively, pulling three boundaries and taking Rabada for two in an over.

Hodge continued to target the pacer, but Rabada had the last laugh, dismissing him by inducing an inside edge onto the stumps.

Dane Piedt then picked up his first wicket as Alick Athanaze’s sweep only found the top edge, easily caught by Markram at first slip.

Jason Holder was dismissed for a duck, caught at long-on, leaving West Indies reeling at 104 for 6 before Tea.

Gudakesh Motie and Joshua da Silva fought back with a 77-run partnership, playing attacking shots against the spinners to balance the game.

However, Maharaj broke the stand, trapping Motie LBW on 45 with an arm ball.

Da Silva was soon dismissed to a ball that straightened after pitching, leaving West Indies eight down.

Temba Bavuma then pulled off a spectacular one-handed catch to dismiss Shamar Joseph, giving Rabada his third wicket.

Warrican showed resilience, hitting a four and a six, but Maharaj induced an inside edge that was safely caught by David Bedingham at forward short leg, sealing South Africa’s 40-run victory.
