Taijul Islam achieved a five-wicket haul on the second morning of the second Test against South Africa, helping Bangladesh claw back with three wickets during the session.
However, South Africa still managed to add over 100 runs, going into the lunch break at 413/5.
The session began with David Bedingham dismissed in the second over, but he successfully overturned the decision.
He quickly found his rhythm, scoring freely against Hasan Mahmud and Taijul, while overnight centurion Tony de Zorzi celebrated his 150 with consecutive boundaries.
Bangladesh faced renewed pressure as the two batsmen capitalized on the bowling attack.
Bedingham and de Zorzi formed a century partnership, with Bedingham reaching his half-century.
After the drinks break, de Zorzi hit a six and a four off back-to-back deliveries, compounding Bangladesh’s challenges, but Taijul soon turned the tide.
After conceding a six to Bedingham, the spinner struck back, clean bowling him on the very next ball.
Bangladesh seized the momentum as Taijul quickly dismissed de Zorzi, trapping him lbw for 177, with a review failing to overturn the decision.
He then made it three wickets in three overs by trapping Kyle Verreyne lbw, reducing South Africa from 386/2 to 391/5 in rapid succession.
Wiaan Mulder and Ryan Rickelton managed to stabilize the innings until the break, ensuring the visitors crossed the 400-run mark.
Now, Bangladesh looked to Taijul to inflict further damage after lunch, as he had claimed all five wickets to fall so far.
