Roger Binny appoints Devajit Saikia as the interim secretary of the BCCI following Jay Shah's appointment as ICC chairman.

Roger Binny has appointed Devajit Saikia as the interim secretary of BCCI

Devajit Saikia represented the BCCI at the recent ICC board meeting.

Roger Binny, the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has appointed joint secretary Devajit Saikia as the interim secretary of the board, utilizing the special powers granted to him under the BCCI constitution.

According to Article 7.2 (d) of the BCCI constitution, “The President shall, in the event of a vacancy, or indisposition of an office-bearer, delegate the functions to another Office-Bearer until the vacancy is duly filled, or the indisposition ceases.”

However, it remains unclear whether this interim arrangement will last until the next BCCI elections in September, when the new three-year cycle begins, or until a permanent secretary is elected.

Binny’s authorisation email, which delegates the secretary’s functions to Saikia, has not been sent to any state association, with only Saikia being informed of his interim role and signing authority.

The need for an interim secretary arose after Jay Shah, the previous BCCI secretary, took on the role of independent chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

As per ICC regulations, Shah cannot be associated with any other member board while holding this position.

The first indication of Saikia’s elevation came when he represented the BCCI at the recent ICC board meeting in Dubai on December 5, shortly after Shah assumed his new role.
