Ricky Ponting has been appointed as the Head Coach of the Punjab Kings

Ricky Ponting previously held the position of head coach at Delhi Capitals.

Ricky Ponting, the former Australian captain, has signed on as the new Head Coach of Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League.

Punjab Kings have been on the lookout for a new coach and a fresh direction following their separation from Trevor Bayliss, as reported by Cricpulse on July 25.

With a major IPL auction approaching, the franchise, which has struggled with consistency in recent seasons, sought a leader who could guide them through this new cycle and shape their future.

“I am grateful to Punjab Kings for giving me the opportunity to be the new Head Coach.

I am excited to embrace this new challenge.

My discussions with the owners and management about the team’s future were very encouraging, and I am thrilled by the alignment of our visions.

We are committed to repaying the loyal fans who have supported the franchise over the years, and we promise they will see a transformed Punjab Kings moving forward,” Ponting said in a media release.

Both Punjab Kings and Ponting explored other options before finalizing the agreement.

Punjab Kings considered various candidates, including an Indian coach, while Ponting also received offers from other IPL teams.

Ultimately, both parties reached a successful agreement.

Ponting is highly regarded within the IPL for his ability to inspire young talent and his professionalism.

His coaching style, focusing on discipline and nurturing potential, has been praised by players like Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, who have played under him at Delhi Capitals.

Known for his mentorship of young players, Ponting’s hands-on approach is well-regarded.

He is reputed for taking rookie players out for breakfast to offer guidance and for his strong example, often being the first to arrive and the last to leave practice sessions.

Delhi Capitals paid tribute to Ponting upon his departure, saying, “We’re finding it hard to put this down in words.

The four values you instilled in us—care, commitment, attitude, and effort—sum up our seven summers together.

Thank you for everything, coach! As you often say, ‘Let’s leave this here mate, grab a beer, get back to work tomorrow.’”

During his tenure with Delhi Capitals from 2018 to 2024, Ponting led the team to the playoffs in three consecutive seasons and guided them to their first final in 2020.

The team finished fifth in 2022, ninth in 2023, and sixth in 2024.

Prior to Delhi Capitals, Ponting coached Mumbai Indians, leading them to an IPL title in 2015 and contributing to their maiden title in 2013.

Punjab Kings are known for frequently changing coaches, though they have recently attempted to provide longer tenures.

Before Bayliss (2023-24), Anil Kumble was the coach for three seasons (2020-22).

Mike Hesson served as coach for one year (2019) after succeeding Brad Hodge (2018).

Despite reaching the final once (2014) and the last four once (2008), Punjab Kings have yet to win the title.
