On Thursday, August 28, the International Cricket Council (ICC) charged Sri Lankan spinner Praveen Jayawickrama with breaches of its anti-corruption code.
The charges against the 25-year-old pertain to violations of three separate codes, involving both international cricket and the 2021 Lanka Premier League season.
The charges include:
Article 2.4.4: Failing to report to the Anti-Corruption Unit, without unnecessary delay, details of an approach to engage in match-fixing in future international matches.
Article 2.4.4: Failing to report to the Anti-Corruption Unit, without unnecessary delay, details of an approach in which he was asked to approach another player, on a corrupter’s behalf, to fix matches in the 2021 Lanka Premier League.
Article 2.4.7: Obstructing the investigation by deleting messages that contained offers and approaches related to corrupt conduct.
Jayawickrama has 14 days, until August 20, to respond to the ICC’s charges.
The sport’s governing body is also authorized to take action regarding his charges connected to the 2021 Lanka Premier League alongside his international cricket violations.
Since making his debut in May 2021, Jayawickrama has played five matches in each format for Sri Lanka.
His last appearance for the national team was in a T20I against Australia in June 2022.
He was also part of Sri Lanka’s 2022 Asia Cup-winning squad but did not feature in any of the matches.
