So, finally Sri Lanka lead by 385 runs.

After a dismal first-innings collapse, New Zealand appeared to regroup through a 97-run partnership between Devon Conway and Kane Williamson in their second attempt.

However, their resistance was short-lived, as a flurry of wickets late in the second session left them facing an imminent defeat.

By Tea on Day 3 of the second Test in Galle, New Zealand were 129/5, still trailing by 385 runs after following on.

Conway led the counterattack with a series of boundaries and even stepped down the track to hit Prabath Jayasuriya for a six.

Utilizing sweeps and reverse sweeps against off spinner Nishan Peiris and Dhananjaya de Silva, Conway raced to a quick fifty off 48 balls, reaching the milestone with a cover drive for four off Milan Rathnayake.

Despite getting an lbw decision overturned, Conway’s aggressive approach ended when he fell to Dhananjaya for 61, with Dinesh Chandimal taking a well-judged catch.

Williamson followed soon after, miscuing Peiris to long-on for 46, and New Zealand’s collapse continued as Daryl Mitchell handed a catch to short-leg off Jayasuriya, while Rachin Ravindra was bowled by Peiris.

From 121/2, New Zealand quickly slipped to 121/5 before Tom Blundell and Glenn Phillips saw them through to Tea without further damage.

Earlier, New Zealand’s first innings ended in a debacle, bowled out for 88—their lowest Test total against Sri Lanka.

Mitchell Santner top-scored with 29, while no other batter crossed 13.

Prabath Jayasuriya wreaked havoc with 6-42, ably supported by debutant Peiris, who claimed 3-33, helping Sri Lanka secure a mammoth 514-run lead—the highest first-innings lead in a Test since 2006.

Jayasuriya struck early, removing Williamson by inducing an edge to slip.

Ravindra attempted to steady the innings alongside Ajaz Patel, but his resistance was cut short as he became Peiris’s maiden Test wicket, bowled for 10 after missing a paddle.

Mitchell briefly counterattacked, but New Zealand soon crumbled to 52/5, with Peiris trapping Ajaz lbw and Jayasuriya removing both Blundell and Phillips in quick succession.

Santner provided a brief fightback, hitting a four and a six off Jayasuriya, but the spinner completed his five-wicket haul by dismissing Mitchell.

Jayasuriya wasn’t done yet, bagging Tim Southee’s wicket with Dhananjaya de Silva taking his fifth catch.

William O’Rourke and Santner added some late resistance in a 7-over stand—the highest partnership of the innings—before Peiris bowled Santner to wrap up the innings.

New Zealand’s second innings began in similarly disappointing fashion, with Tom Latham falling in the first over, caught at bat-pad off Peiris.
