Dimuth Karunaratne (72*) and Dinesh Chandimal (54*) ensured a wicketless post-lunch session on day three, putting Sri Lanka in a strong position in the opening Test against New Zealand at Galle.
The pair batted with impressive control, creating minimal opportunities for a New Zealand attack that toiled under the scorching sun.
The pitch provided significant turn and some reverse swing for the pacers, but batting remained feasible.
Although Karunaratne and Chandimal experienced occasional lapses in concentration, they were fortunate to escape any major threats.
Their ability to rotate the strike fluidly kept the scoreboard ticking.
Both players were intent on applying pressure on New Zealand’s spinners, which even compelled a bowler of Mitchell Santner’s quality to deliver loose balls.
William O’Rourke remained a consistent threat throughout his spells, although his pace was affected by the intense heat.
Ajaz Patel and Glenn Phillips struggled to consistently find their lines and lengths, preventing Karunaratne and Chandimal from facing significant pressure.
The duo continued to bat smoothly, extending Sri Lanka’s lead toward triple figures.
