Colin Munro has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, effective immediately.
The dynamic New Zealand batsman, renowned for his aggressive style, has amassed over 3000 runs in his international career.
Despite not representing the national team for the past four years, Munro’s last appearance was in a T20I against India in 2020.
Debuting in T20Is in December 2012 and in ODIs the following month, Munro’s Test career was limited to just one match in January 2013, as he primarily focused on white-ball cricket.
Across formats, he represented New Zealand 123 times, accumulating over 3000 runs.
Munro holds the distinction of being the sole New Zealand batsman to score three centuries in T20Is.
He was part of the T20 World Cup squads in 2014 and 2016 and contributed to the team’s runner-up finish in the 2019 ODI World Cup.
Despite his illustrious international career, Munro revealed that his exclusion from the 2024 T20 World Cup squad influenced his decision to retire.
Expressing his sentiments, the 37-year-old stated, “Playing for the BLACKCAPS has always been the pinnacle of my career.
Representing my country 123 times across all formats is an achievement I will forever cherish.”
Munro also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to pursue franchise cricket globally.
NZC chief executive Scott Weenink commended Munro for his innovative batting style, labeling him a pioneer of aggressive batting.
“Colin was among the first to adopt the aggressive, 360-degree batting style that is now embraced worldwide.
He revolutionized short-form cricket with his innovative approach and calculated risk-taking,” Weenink remarked, acknowledging Munro’s significant contribution to over a hundred international matches.
As Munro bids farewell to international cricket, his legacy as an innovative batsman and trailblazer in the sport will be remembered fondly, with best wishes extended for his future endeavors.
