The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to hold a Special General Meeting (SGM) to elect two new office-bearers following the resignations of Jay Shah and Ashish Shelar.

The SGM is expected to be scheduled for January 12 in Mumbai, when the BCCI is likely to appoint a new secretary and treasurer.

The decision to convene the SGM was made during a virtual meeting of the BCCI Apex Council on Thursday evening.

Due to the urgency of the situation, the meeting was called on short notice, with the notices sent out only on Wednesday.

The Apex Council formally approved the SGM, leaving the final decision on the date and venue to BCCI office-bearers.

The meeting was planned for December 20, and under BCCI regulations, a minimum of 21 days’ notice is required, meaning the SGM is likely to be held around January 11 or 12.

According to Cricpulse, January 12 is the confirmed date for the meeting.

Shah resigned as secretary on November 30 after being appointed Independent Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Treasurer Ashish Shelar stepped down on December 15 after being appointed to the new Maharashtra government under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, as ministers are ineligible to hold office-bearer positions according to the BCCI constitution.

As an interim measure, BCCI president Roger Binny assigned the secretary’s duties to joint secretary Devjit Saikia.

However, no interim arrangement has been made for the treasurer’s responsibilities as of December 19.

According to the BCCI constitution, new office-bearers must be elected within 45 days of a vacancy.

This means the secretary’s position must be filled by January 15, and the proposed SGM date of January 12 falls within this constitutional timeline.
