A Bangladesh Cricket Board official confirmed on Thursday (January 2) that Najmul Hossain Shanto has decided to step down as the national T20I captain.

Earlier, Cricpulse reported that Najmul was not interested in continuing as captain after the home series against South Africa.

Initially, Shanto had planned to step down from the T20I captaincy following the 2024 World Cup but later reconsidered and expressed a desire to quit as captain in all formats.

However, his decision to step down from all formats was reversed after BCB president Faruque Ahmed intervened, and Shanto was named captain for the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan.

Unfortunately, he picked up an injury during the series.

“Shanto finally told us that he won’t lead in the T20Is, and we accepted it.

Since we don’t have T20Is scheduled at the moment, we have time and are not rushing to pick a new captain,” a top BCB official told Cricpulse.

“If there are no injury concerns, Najmul will remain the captain for Tests and ODIs, and we have already discussed this.”

It is understood that Litton Das, who expressed his willingness to take on the T20I captaincy long-term after leading the team to a 3-0 series win over the West Indies, is set to continue as captain in the shortest format.

Najmul will, however, continue to lead Bangladesh in the upcoming Champions Trophy.

There had been speculation that Mehedy Hasan might take over as captain, having served as the stand-in skipper for the Test and ODI series against the West Indies when the regular captain was injured.
