Afghanistan Cricket Board Chairman Mirwais Ashraf is set to continue in his role for an additional three years.
An ACB official, who spoke to Cricpulse on condition of anonymity, confirmed the news on Friday.
Ashraf, who was initially appointed as chairman in 2021, was expected to conclude his term in August 2023.
“Due to his performance over the past three years, the Taliban government has extended Mirwais Ashraf’s term as chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board for another three years,” said the official.
“Stability is key to our success, and we strive to maintain it,” the official added.
“In the last three years, we have had one chairman, one CEO, and one coach, and we’ve changed our captain only once.
We believe that focusing on stability rather than frequent changes is crucial for developing as a cricketing nation.”
It is understood that the Patron-in-Chief of Afghanistan, Mullah Muhammad Hassan, the country’s Prime Minister, decided to extend Ashraf’s tenure.
Ashraf, who was initially appointed as head of the board and later elected to continue, will serve until December, when the next election will take place at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
The Patron-in-Chief is reportedly supporting Ashraf’s continuation, and he is expected to face minimal opposition in the upcoming election.
The election is anticipated to adhere to the ACB constitution and international standards, with the board members electing the new chairman through a transparent voting process at the AGM.
