Matthew Mott, England’s white-ball head coach, has stepped down from his role with immediate effect, according to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
Assistant Coach Marcus Trescothick will take over on an interim basis for the remainder of the home summer, which includes three T20Is and five ODIs against Australia in September.
Mott, who assumed the role in May 2022 from Chris Silverwood as part of a split-coaching setup, signed a four-year contract and led England to victory in the T20 World Cup in Australia later that year.
Under his guidance, England also secured white-ball series wins against Australia, Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, and Pakistan.
However, the team’s performance in the ODI World Cup in India last year, where they finished seventh out of ten teams and faced the risk of not qualifying for the Champions Trophy, marked a low point in Mott’s tenure.
Despite a stronger performance in this year’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean, where England lost only to India in the semi-final, most victories came against less competitive teams, which was insufficient for Mott to retain his position.
“After three World Cup cycles in a short period, I believe the team needs a new direction to tackle upcoming challenges,” said Rob Key, ECB’s Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket.
“This decision was not made lightly, but I believe it is the right time for the team’s future success.
With a focus shifting towards the Champions Trophy early next year and the next cycle of white-ball competitions, it is crucial to ensure the team is well-prepared.”
Key also noted that Marcus Trescothick is highly respected within the team and will work alongside white-ball captain Jos Buttler to maintain continuity and stability.
The search for a full-time replacement will now commence to ensure the best candidate is selected for the role.
Matthew Mott, who joined England after a successful stint with the Australia women’s team, expressed his pride in the 2022 World Cup victory.
“I am immensely proud to have coached the England Men’s team; it has been an honor.
We have given everything to achieve success over the past two years, and I am incredibly proud of the character and passion the team has shown, including a magnificent T20 World Cup victory in 2022,” Mott said.
He thanked the players, management, and ECB for their support and commitment during his tenure, and also expressed gratitude to the England fans for their unwavering support.
Trescothick, the interim coach, outlined plans for the Champions Trophy scheduled in Pakistan next year, stating, “The focus is on preparing for the series against Australia and planning for next year’s Champions Trophy.
England cricket is in a strong position, and we have significant potential.
It is about harnessing that potential and building on the work done by Matthew Mott and the rest of the setup.
I’m excited about the challenge and shaping our approach to the game.”
