Jason Smith, Nqaba Peter, and Amdile Simelane have earned their maiden ODI call-ups to South Africa’s squad for the upcoming series against Afghanistan and Ireland in the UAE.

South Africa is set to play three ODIs against Afghanistan, beginning on September 18 in Sharjah.

Following that, they will face Ireland in two T20Is and three ODIs in Abu Dhabi, starting on September 27.

Legspinner Nqaba Peter and all-rounder Jason Smith made their T20I debuts against the West Indies earlier this year, in May and August 2024 respectively.

Peter has played two matches, taking three wickets, while Smith has featured in one game, where he scored six runs.

For Simelane, this marks his first international call-up.

The 21-year-old all-rounder has been identified as a high-potential talent and was part of South Africa’s Emerging Tour to Zimbabwe in August.

He also represented South Africa A in a one-day series against Sri Lanka A.

Meanwhile, pacer Lungi Ngidi has fully recovered from the right calf injury that sidelined him from the recent T20I series against the West Indies in August, and he has been included in all three squads.

Head coach Rob Walter highlighted that these tours would offer valuable exposure to South Africa’s young and fringe players, emphasizing the importance of expanding the player pool in preparation for upcoming major ICC tournaments, including the 2027 World Cup at home.

“We’ve chosen to give opportunities to fringe players and those who have impressed recently.

This is a strategic move to build a broader pool of players as we gear up for the major ICC tournaments over the next 18 months, with a long-term focus on the 2027 50-over World Cup,” said Walter.

“Tours like these provide a unique opportunity for players to gain international experience in conditions different from what they’re accustomed to.”

The South African squad is scheduled to depart for the UAE on September 14.
