Joe Root has been reinstated to the England ODI squad for the first time since the 2023 World Cup, being named in the 15-man squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy.
This same squad will also compete in the ODI series in India prior to the global event.
Ben Stokes, who could have been a candidate for a return to the 50-over squad, was not included due to a recent hamstring injury sustained during the final Test against New Zealand, as confirmed by the ECB.
Following England’s disappointing World Cup campaign in India last year, where Root scored just 276 runs at an average of 30.66, he was excluded from 50-over cricket as the team focused on giving opportunities to younger players.
However, with Brendon McCullum now at the helm as the all-format head coach, Root has made his comeback to the setup.
The pace attack is led by Mark Wood and Jofra Archer, with additional support from Saqib Mahmood, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, and Jamie Overton.
Jacob Bethell’s recent rise earned him a spot in his first ICC tournament, while Jamie Smith also made the cut, with Will Jacks being left out.
The same squad has been selected for the upcoming five-match T20I series, with the only change being Rehan Ahmed replacing Joe Root.
The tour begins with the T20Is starting on January 22, followed by the ODI series from February 6-12.
