Jay Shah is set to take charge of the ICC on December 1.

Jay Shah has been elected as the new Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), succeeding Greg Barclay.

He will assume office on December 1.

Elected unopposed, Shah’s candidacy was uncontested, with no other nominations filed against him.

At 35, Shah will be the youngest person to lead the ICC.

He will serve a three-year term, with an option to extend for an additional three years.

Shah will need to step down from his current role as Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), a position he has held since 2019.

The ICC confirmed that Shah was the sole nominee for the role, with several sets of nominations filed on his behalf by the 16 existing directors.

According to ICC rules, nominations are submitted by the directors, and the candidate does not need to file papers themselves.

Among Shah’s immediate tasks will be appointing a new Independent Woman Director for the ICC, a position vacant since Indra Nooyi’s tenure ended last month.

He will also need to address Disney Star’s request for renegotiation of the $3 billion broadcast deal and ensure a smooth transition at the BCCI by finding a replacement for his current role.

Shah has expressed his commitment to advancing cricket’s global reach and popularity, particularly with its upcoming inclusion in the LA 2028 Olympics, which he sees as a pivotal moment for the sport’s growth.

“I am humbled by the nomination as Chair of the International Cricket Council,” Shah stated.

“I am dedicated to working closely with the ICC team and our member nations to globalize cricket further.

We are at a crucial point where balancing multiple formats, promoting advanced technologies, and expanding into new markets are essential.

Our goal is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before.”

He added, “We will build on the valuable lessons learned while embracing fresh thinking and innovation to enhance cricket’s global appeal.

The inclusion of our sport in the Olympics at LA 2028 is a significant opportunity for cricket’s growth, and I am confident it will propel the sport forward in unprecedented ways.”

The ICC remarked, “Shah’s election marks a new chapter for the ICC as it aims to broaden the game’s reach and continue its evolution on the global stage.”
