So, finally Bangladesh beat Ireland by 154 runs.
Bangladesh kicked off their bid for direct qualification into the 2025 ODI World Cup with a dominant 154-run victory over Ireland in the first ODI in Dhaka.
Choosing to bat, Bangladesh posted a competitive total of 252/4 in 50 overs, with a solid 59-run opening partnership between Fargana Hoque, who scored a half-century, and Murshida Khatun (38).
The standout performance came from captain Sharmin Akhter, who fell just four runs short of a century, scoring 96 off 89 balls.
Her knock included 13 fours and a six, anchoring a 104-run stand for the second wicket and putting Bangladesh in a commanding position.
Akter was dismissed in the 49th over, caught off the bowling of Freya Sargent, but her brilliant knock ensured Bangladesh had more than enough runs on the board.
Ireland’s chase faltered early, as Marufa Akter struck twice in consecutive deliveries to leave the tourists reeling.
Nahida Akter then tore through the middle order, finishing with figures of 3 for 23.
Sultana Khatun mirrored her effort, also taking 3 wickets for 23 runs, including two wickets in one over, as she wrapped up Ireland’s lower order.
Ireland were bowled out for a paltry 98 in just 29 overs, with only three batters reaching double digits.
It was a disappointing performance from Ireland in the series opener, as they struggled to mount any significant resistance.
