Rohit and his team have arrived in Colombo ahead of the ODI series, with Nayar appointed to oversee the net sessions
Rohit Sharma has arrived in Colombo, traveling from the United States to Sri Lanka, for the forthcoming three-match ODI series.
Along with the Indian captain, players selected exclusively for the ODIs against Sri Lanka checked into the ITC Ratnadipa hotel in the Sri Lankan capital on Sunday night.
Among them were Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Kuldeep Yadav, and Harshit Rana.
Team sources from Sri Lanka have revealed that the ODI players will participate in a net session at the stadium on Monday.
The Indian team management has deputed Abhishek Nayar, one of the assistant coaches under head coach Gautam Gambhir, to oversee the session in Colombo.
Nayar left for Colombo on Monday morning after the second T20I on Sunday night.
The other members of the squad will join Rohit and his team after the completion of the third and final T20I in Pallekele on July 30.
The tourists have already won the three-match T20I series by taking an unassailable 2-0 lead.
The ODI series starts in Colombo on August 2, with all three games being played at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium.
The series concludes on August 7, following the second ODI on August 4.
Meanwhile, Morne Morkel is expected to join the coaching staff under Gambhir as a bowling coach.
His involvement with the team is anticipated to begin with the home series against Bangladesh, starting in September.
Gambhir recently mentioned that the team management would be evaluating the coaching setup during the six-match series in Sri Lanka, with plans to establish a full-fledged coaching staff for future series.
It remains uncertain whether Sairaj Bahutule, who specializes in spin bowling and is currently touring Lanka as an interim bowling coach, will continue.
Given that Morkel, a fast bowling expert, is not known for his expertise in spin bowling, the team may require a dedicated spin bowling coach.
If Bahutule retains his position, the team would include two assistant coaches (Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate), a bowling coach (Morkel), a fielding coach (T Dilip), and a spin bowling coach, along with head coach Gambhir.
This would bring the total to six coaches, which may be considered too many.
