Rohit Sharma is set to join the team in Perth on 24th November
Skipper Rohit Sharma is set to fly out to Australia in the coming days and is expected to join the team in Perth on November 24, the third day of the first Test at Optus Stadium.
His departure to Australia was delayed due to the birth of his second child.
Rohit will be available for the second Test of the series at Adelaide Oval from December 6-10.
To prepare for that match, the Indian captain will also participate in a practice game with the India A squad against the Prime Minister’s XI, a day-night, two-day fixture at Manuka Oval, Canberra, from November 30 to December 1.
The Indian team departed for Australia in three batches between November 9 and 11, but Rohit stayed behind for the birth of his son on November 15.
Since then, his trip to Australia had been the subject of much speculation.
Although some reports suggested he would arrive in Perth before the first Test, it was always clear that his journey would be delayed.
Cricpulse can confirm that he has now informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he will join the squad on Sunday.
In Rohit’s absence, Jasprit Bumrah is leading the team in the first Test.
Speaking on the eve of the Perth Test, Bumrah mentioned staying in touch with the regular skipper.
“I spoke with Rohit earlier, but I got a little bit of clarity on leading the side after coming here,” Bumrah said.
Bumrah also hinted at the likely inclusion of Mohammed Shami in the squad.
“Shami bhai has started to play cricket, and obviously, he is an integral part of this team.
I’m sure the management is keeping a keen eye.
Hopefully, things fall into place, and you might see him here as well,” the stand-in skipper said.
Shami has been playing domestic matches and is part of the Bengal squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which starts on November 23 in different centers.
Shami will be playing in Rajkot, but he will need clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) before being considered for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
