Former Bangladesh opener Imrul Kayes has announced his retirement from First-class cricket.
In a heartfelt video message posted on his Facebook page on Wednesday, Imrul shared, “On November 16, I will retire from Tests and First-class cricket.
It is the most difficult and emotional decision of my life.”
Despite his retirement from red-ball cricket, the left-handed opener will continue to play white-ball cricket.
Imrul’s final First-class match will take place at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on November 16, when his team, Khulna Division, faces Dhaka Division in the fifth round of the ongoing National Cricket League, Bangladesh’s premier domestic First-class competition.
The 35-year-old, who last played a Test match at Eden Gardens in 2019, has accumulated 1797 runs in 39 Tests at an average of 24.28.
Imrul formed a highly successful opening partnership with Tamim Iqbal, with the duo putting together four century partnerships and adding 2336 runs in 53 innings—the highest for any Bangladesh opening pair.
Their first-wicket partnership average of 45.80 remains the best for Bangladesh.
In his final First-class game, Imrul will be aiming to score at least 70 runs, which would take him past the 8000-run mark in his First-class career.
