Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has hinted at the possibility of extending his international career into the next World Cup, which is slated to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka in 2026.
Heading into the 2024 T20 World Cup, there were speculations about this being potentially Shakib’s last global T20I tournament, as he and Rohit Sharma remain the only two players to have featured in every edition of the ICC T20 World Cup so far.
Currently holding the record for the most wickets in tournament history with 47 dismissals in 36 matches, Shakib vaguely clarified his stance on continuing his international T20 cricket journey.
Although earlier discussions hinted at his decision post the 2025 Champions Trophy, Shakib now reveals his intention to keep playing with an eye on the next T20 World Cup as well.
“Initially, I didn’t anticipate such a lengthy career, and participating in every T20 World Cup alongside Rohit Sharma has been a source of immense pride for me.
Representing my country on such a platform has been fulfilling,” Shakib stated in a video uploaded on BCB’s Facebook page.
“Rohit Sharma and I are the only two players to have played in all T20 World Cups, and I aspire to continue this streak.
However, my immediate focus remains on performing well in the upcoming tournament, and I believe Bangladesh can surpass its previous T20 performances,” he added.
Spending most of his time in the USA due to his family’s residency there, Shakib expressed optimism about Bangladesh’s prospects in the tournament, citing similarities between the wickets in the USA and those back home.
“Although the USA feels like a second home, our familiarity with the pitches there, particularly in Florida, should work in our favor.
I anticipate similar conditions to what we’re accustomed to, which should benefit us,” Shakib remarked.
In terms of the competition, Shakib stressed the importance of a balanced contest between bat and ball in the ICC T20 World Cup.
“I hope to see a fair balance between bat and ball in this tournament.
Maintaining this equilibrium is crucial for an exciting competition,” he emphasized.
Acknowledging the challenges of his dual roles as a cricketer and a Member of Parliament in Bangladesh, Shakib admitted finding cricket comparatively easier than politics.
“Cricket has been my forte since childhood, so adapting to the complexities of politics has been a learning curve for me.
Despite the challenges, I remain focused on contributing to the Bangladesh team’s success,” Shakib affirmed.
Anticipating strong support from Bangladeshi fans during the World Cup, Shakib expressed his desire to make significant contributions to the team’s performance.
“With the backing of Bangladeshi fans, I’m optimistic about our prospects in the tournament.
Their support will undoubtedly boost our morale, and I aim to make meaningful contributions to Bangladesh’s journey in this World Cup,” Shakib concluded.
