Faruque Ahmed, former cricketer and chief selector, assumes the role of BCB President, succeeding Nazmul Hasan.

Faruque Ahmed has assumed the role of the new BCB President

Faruque Ahmed represented Bangladesh in seven ODIs.

Faruque Ahmed, a former national cricketer and chief selector, has succeeded Nazmul Hasan as the President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

The chairman of the BCB’s umpires committee, Iftekhar Ahmed, confirmed the news to Cricpulse on Wednesday.

This development took place during a BCB board meeting at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, where the former president resigned, and Faruque Ahmed was elected.

When asked by Cricpulse if Faruque Ahmed had indeed replaced Nazmul Hasan as BCB President, Iftekhar, also known as Mithu, affirmed the change.

Cricpulse had previously reported that Nazmul was preparing to step down.

He has been serving his fourth term as the head of Bangladesh’s cricket governing body and has been in London with his wife since the unrest in the country began, sparked by student protests following the dissolution of the Sheikh Hasina government.

Faruque Ahmed, who played seven ODIs for Bangladesh, has previously served as BCB’s chief selector for two terms—from 2003 to 2007 and from 2013 to 2016.

He resigned before completing his second term due to disagreements over the expansion of the selection panel from three members.

The National Sports Council (NSC) has appointed Faruque Ahmed and Nazmul Abedin, a well-known local coach who recently criticized the BCB board, as its new directors.

After the announcement, they participated in the BCB board of directors meeting at the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

This move follows the NSC’s decision to replace former directors Jalal Yunus and Ahmed Sajjadul Alam with Faruque and Nazmul Abedin.

While Yunus resigned on Monday, Alam chose not to step down, leaving the decision to the NSC.

The BCB meeting was attended by directors Mahbubul Anam, Khaled Mahmud, Akram Khan, Salauddin Ahmed, Kazi Inam Ahmed, Iftekhar Ahmed, Fahim Sinha, and Saiful Alam Swapan.

Former BCB President Nazmul Hasan, along with 16 other directors, has notably been absent from Dhaka since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5.

During the meeting, the BCB changed their signatories from Ismail Haider to Fahim Sinha, as Haider Mallik, a close associate of the former president, is also currently unavailable.

BCB Chief Executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury informed the board directors of Nazmul’s resignation.

Subsequently, the present directors unanimously elected Faruque Ahmed as the new BCB President, although the two vice-president positions remain vacant.

The absence of a vice-president has raised concerns, as the Nazmul-led board did not appoint anyone to this role, leaving a leadership gap following his departure.
