Jos Buttler to miss the Australia T20Is and Phil Salt has been appointed as the stand-in captain
England captain Jos Buttler has been ruled out of the upcoming T20I series against Australia due to a right calf injury and might also miss the subsequent five-match ODI series later this month, the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed on Thursday (September 5).
In Buttler’s absence, Phil Salt has been named stand-in captain.
Buttler sustained the injury ahead of The Hundred, causing him to miss the tournament.
Although he was expected to recover in time for the white-ball series against Australia, the injury has taken a further toll, potentially sidelining him for the remainder of the English summer.
He has been out of action since England’s semi-final exit at the 2024 T20 World Cup in late June.
All-rounder Jamie Overton has been called up to the T20I squad as a replacement, although he may feature as a pure batter while he continues to recover from a stress injury in his back.
Jordan Cox, currently with the England red-ball squad for the ongoing series against Sri Lanka, has been added to the ODI squad as cover.
Australia, who are currently touring Scotland for T20Is, are set to play three T20Is against England, starting on September 11 in Southampton, with the ODI series beginning on September 19 at Trent Bridge.
