His CPL 2024 season was cut short by injury, and Dwayne Bravo has now confirmed his retirement from all forms of cricket.
Bravo, who retired from the IPL last year, is the all-time leading wicket-taker in T20 history.
“After twenty-one years as a professional cricketer, it’s been an incredible journey filled with many highs and a few lows,” Bravo wrote in his Instagram post announcing his retirement on Thursday (September 26).
“Most importantly, I was able to live my dream because I gave 100% at every step.
As much as I’d love to continue this relationship, it’s time to face reality.
“My mind wants to keep going, but my body can no longer endure the pain, breakdowns, and strain.
I can’t put myself in a position where I might let down my teammates, my fans, or the teams I represent.
“So, with a heavy heart, I officially announce my retirement from the sport.
Today, the Champion bids farewell.”
The West Indies great had previously retired from international cricket in 2021 and has since freelanced in T20 leagues while also venturing into coaching.
In the past year, Bravo worked with his IPL team, the Chennai Super Kings, and was appointed as Afghanistan’s bowling consultant for the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA.
During his 18-year career in T20 cricket, Bravo won championships with various teams, including the CPL, IPL, Pakistan Super League, and Big Bash League.
He secured three of his five CPL titles with the Trinbago Knight Riders, leading them to consecutive trophies in 2017 and 2018 before guiding the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots to their maiden title in 2021.
Additionally, he’s a two-time World Cup winner with the West Indies, retiring with an impressive record of 631 wickets in 582 matches in the shortest format of the game.
Bravo had announced at the start of the ongoing CPL that it would be his last season.
While he was retained by MI Emirates in the UAE’s ILT20, a groin injury sustained while fielding in a CPL 2024 game earlier this week ended those aspirations.
