Dawid Malan has announced his retirement from international cricket, as confirmed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Wednesday (August 28).
Over his career, he accumulated 1,892 runs in T20Is (62 matches), 1,450 runs in ODIs (30 matches), and 1,074 runs in Tests (22 matches).
Notably, Malan is one of only two English batters, alongside Jos Buttler, to have scored a century in all three formats of international cricket.
A late bloomer, Malan made an immediate impact in his debut match—a T20I against South Africa in 2017—scoring 78 off just 44 balls.
His Test debut followed shortly thereafter, but his performances were inconsistent.
However, during the 2017-18 Ashes series, where England faced a 4-0 defeat to Australia, Malan managed to score his lone Test century at the WACA in Perth.
Malan truly shone in the T20I format, becoming a key player for England.
In 2020, he reached the top of the ICC Men’s T20I Rankings, being named the No. 1 T20I batsman in the world.
A few months later, in 2021, he became the fastest player to reach 1,000 runs in T20Is, achieving the milestone in just 24 innings.
He was also a member of England’s T20 World Cup-winning squad in 2022.
In an interview with The Times, the 37-year-old expressed disappointment with his Test career, having not been recalled to the Test squad since the fifth Ashes Test in Hobart in 2022.
However, he expressed satisfaction with his achievements in limited-overs cricket.
“Test cricket was always the pinnacle for me growing up.
At times, I played well, but overall, I wasn’t consistent enough, which was disappointing because I believed I was a better player than that.
On the other hand, I surpassed my own expectations in white-ball formats.”
Malan also credited his former captain, Eoin Morgan, for supporting him at the international level and giving him the confidence he needed.
“Eoin was brilliant at shutting out the noise and silencing any criticism.
If anything was being said or written, he would openly back me.
He’d tell me, ‘If there was anything wrong with the way you’re playing, I’ll be the first one to tell you.’”
Malan’s last appearance for England was in November 2023 against Pakistan during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
