Jewel Andrew’s Unbeaten Fifty and Shamar Springer’s Brilliant 4-29 Go in Vain as St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots Edge Out Antigua and Barbados Falcons by One Wicket in Final-Ball CPL 2024 Opener

Jewel Andrew’s unbeaten fifty and Shamar Springer’s impressive 4-29 in the middle overs weren’t enough to secure a win, as St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots narrowly defeated Antigua and Barbados Falcons by just one wicket in a thrilling final-ball finish on the opening night of CPL 2024.

After being put in to bat, the Falcons posted a competitive total of 163/4, thanks to opener Fakhar Zaman’s 43 and Andrew’s unbeaten half-century, which came in a crucial 61-run partnership with Fabian Allen.

Anrich Nortje struck early, denting the Falcons’ lineup in his very first over, but Zaman, alongside Koli James (22 off 24), steadied the innings with a 60-run stand.

Tabraiz Shamsi broke the vital partnership, dismissing Zaman just seven runs short of his fifty.

The Falcons lost both set batters within nine deliveries and Sam Billings three overs later, slipping to 102/4 as the death overs loomed.

Andrew, who had been batting at just over a run-a-ball, then accelerated, guiding the Falcons to add 51 runs in the last six overs.

He reached his fifty off 30 balls in the final over, supported by Fabian Allen, who contributed a quickfire 24* off 17 balls, including two sixes.

In response, four of the Patriots’ top-five batters got starts, but none could capitalize to make the chase comfortable.

Shamar Springer’s brilliant spell had SNP in trouble at 111/5.

He removed the set Evin Lewis and the dangerous Tristan Stubbs in consecutive overs, causing further damage.

A brief 34-run partnership between Kyle Mayers (39 off 24) and Odean Smith (27 off 19) offered hope, but Springer struck again, dismissing Smith and handing Rilee Rossouw a first-ball duck.

Springer’s outstanding day continued when he took a spectacular boundary-line catch to end Mayers’ knock two overs later.

A tense collapse followed, including the loss of two wickets in the final over with seven runs still required.

However, Nortje held his nerve to see the Patriots across the finish line, securing a dramatic win to kick off their CPL 2024 campaign.
