Following the recent lifting of his leadership ban, David Warner has been appointed as the captain of Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Big Bash League season.
The veteran left-hander replaces Chris Green, although Green will remain part of the team as a player.
It’s been less than two weeks since Warner became eligible to captain again, after a three-member independent panel concluded that he had met all the necessary criteria for the ban to be lifted with immediate effect.
“Captaining the Thunder again this season means a lot to me.
I was part of the team from the start, and now to be back with that ‘C’ next to my name feels fantastic.
I’m excited to lead from the front and share my experience with the young talent coming through,” Warner said.
“Leadership off the field is just as important.
I want to create an environment where we can take a break from the game, bond, and have fun.
Whether it’s over a team meal, on the golf course, or engaging with fans in Western Sydney, it’s all about building camaraderie and staying grounded.”
Warner also praised Chris Green’s leadership.
“I want to compliment the way Greeny led the team last season.
He’s an exceptional talent with fantastic leadership qualities.
Jason Sangha, too, before his injury—I’ve gained great insight from both, and I know they’re guys I can lean on this season.”
Sydney Thunder will be hoping Warner’s appointment as captain helps turn their fortunes around after finishing at the bottom of the table last season.
The BBL|14 season begins on December 15, with Thunder’s first game against Adelaide Strikers in Canberra on December 17.
