So, finally Bangladesh won by 6 wickets.
Bangladesh’s top six delivered crucial performances to secure a historic 2-0 series sweep against Pakistan.
Starting Day 5 of the second Test in Rawalpindi at 42/0, chasing 185 for victory, Bangladesh reached their target in the second session with the experienced pair of Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan leading them across the finish line.
This 2-0 series victory marks Bangladesh’s second overseas series win (minimum two matches), following their 2-0 triumph against the West Indies in 2009.
It is also Bangladesh’s first series win against Pakistan.
Shadman Islam’s confident boundary off Mohammad Ali’s second ball got Bangladesh off to a good start on the final day.
However, Pakistan’s pacers kept the openers under pressure with accurate lines, resulting in some play-and-misses and a close call when a bottom edge off Zakir Hasan went unnoticed.
Despite the tight bowling, the openers managed to extend their partnership past fifty, marking Bangladesh’s first fifty-plus opening stand since December 2022.
Zakir scored a well-compiled 40 before being dismissed by Mir Hamza, who bowled him with a delivery that held its line.
Pakistan’s disciplined bowling made scoring difficult, with Shadman breaking the dry spell by hitting a full delivery from Hamza for four.
He was fortunate when Salman Agha dropped a tough chance at second slip and later scored another boundary.
Shadman’s innings ended when he was caught at mid-off off a Khurram Shahzad delivery.
Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque then formed a crucial partnership, bringing Bangladesh closer to their target.
Mominul’s edgy boundary and Najmul’s well-timed fours reduced the target to below 100.
As they grew more confident, they managed to score 80 runs in the first session off 27 overs, reaching 122/2 at lunch with 63 runs required.
In the second session, with rain clouds looming, Pakistan’s Salman and Hamza bowled tightly, but Najmul’s reverse sweep provided some urgency.
Najmul was dismissed soon after, ending a 57-run second-wicket stand, but Mominul and Rahim continued to progress.
Rahim survived two reviews in Abrar Ahmed’s over, and despite Abrar’s effective bowling, Rahim and Shakib pushed Bangladesh closer to the target.
Shakib hit a straight six and, alongside Rahim, who top-edged a pull for a boundary, guided Bangladesh to victory with a winning boundary off Abrar.
The foundation for Bangladesh’s victory was laid by Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz on Days 2 and 3.
After a washed-out opening day, Bangladesh put Pakistan in to bat on Day 2, where Shan Masood and Saim Ayub scored fifties.
Bangladesh then took regular wickets to restrict Pakistan to 274 in their first innings.
Bangladesh’s reply started poorly, but Litton Das’s 138 and a 165-run seventh-wicket stand with Mehidy Hasan Miraz (78) brought them close to Pakistan’s total, securing a 12-run lead.
Bangladesh’s bowlers excelled on Day 4, dismissing Pakistan for 172 thanks to Hasan Mahmud’s maiden five-wicket haul and Nahid Rana’s career-best 4 for 44.
Despite a positive start from Zakir on the latter part of Day 4, bad light and rain led to an early end.
With thunderstorms forecast for the final day, the weather remained favorable, allowing Bangladesh’s top order to secure a clinical win.
