Bangladesh turned the tables on hosts Pakistan on Day 4 in Rawalpindi, closing with a lead of 94 runs and reducing Pakistan to 23/1 in their second innings.
Bangladesh successfully surpassed Pakistan’s first-innings total of 448/6 through a collective batting effort, led by Mushfiqur Rahim, who narrowly missed his fourth Test double century, falling just nine runs short.
Mushfiqur’s 191 anchored Bangladesh to a formidable 565 on a placid pitch where Pakistan’s bowlers struggled throughout Day 4.
Building on the gritty efforts of the previous day, Mushfiqur, alongside Litton Das, made a cautious start to the morning session.
Although Litton managed only four runs to his overnight score of 52, Mehidy Hasan Miraz provided vital support, forging a partnership that further frustrated Pakistan’s attack.
In a slow-moving morning session that yielded just 73 runs in 25 overs, Mushfiqur reached his century.
He grew more confident after the lunch break, striking a series of boundaries with Mehidy playing a supportive role.
Bangladesh’s progress was steady, with Mushfiqur and Mehidy keeping the scoreboard ticking, adding to Pakistan’s frustration.
The hosts’ troubles were compounded as they had exhausted all their reviews by the end of Day 3, leaving them unable to overturn decisions on Day 4.
A close call against Mushfiqur was reversed upon review, and later, Babar Azam dropped Mushfiqur after he reached 150.
Mehidy remained a reliable partner as Bangladesh amassed 109 runs in 31 overs, extending their lead over Pakistan.
In the final session, Mushfiqur accelerated, finding the boundary more frequently.
His marathon 341-ball innings ended when he edged a delivery from Mohammad Ali, leaving Bangladesh at 528/7.
The tailenders added crucial runs, with Mehidy contributing 77 as Bangladesh pushed their total to 565 before being bowled out.
Bangladesh then struck early with the ball, taking a 117-run lead into Pakistan’s second innings.
Saim Ayub, attempting to chase a wide delivery from Shoriful Islam, edged it to Litton Das, leaving Pakistan at 23/1 after 10 overs, still trailing by 94 runs.
