At The Lunch of Day-5:
Bangladesh scored 233 (1st Innings) and 146 (2nd Innings), where as India scored 285/9 decl. (1st Innings).
So, finally Bangladesh lead by 94 runs.
India made significant progress toward securing victory on the fifth morning of the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur.
The visitors lost their remaining eight wickets in the first session, lasting nearly three hours, leaving India with a modest target of just 95 runs to clinch the match.
Jasprit Bumrah (3-17) and Ravindra Jadeja (3-50) were the primary wicket-takers for India on the final day, benefitting from some questionable shot selection by Bangladesh’s batters.
Apart from Shadman Islam (50) and, to a lesser extent, Mushfiqur Rahim (37), the rest of the batting lineup struggled to mount a challenge.
Starting the day with a narrow deficit of 26 runs, Bangladesh aimed to gain the lead without losing a wicket.
However, their plans went awry when first innings centurion Mominul Haque fell victim to a clever strategy devised by Rohit Sharma and his team.
Aware of Mominul’s tendency to sweep, they positioned a leg slip to prevent him from attempting a paddle shot.
In trying to execute a hard sweep, he edged the ball, leading to a sharp catch by KL Rahul at leg slip, off the bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin.
This early wicket rattled Bangladesh, although they managed a brief recovery.
Shadman played with positive intent, hitting a flurry of boundaries through crisp timing.
He defended well, left the ball judiciously, and capitalized on any loose deliveries.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto also looked comfortable as the pair added a half-century partnership to keep the visitors afloat amid a crisis.
However, this calm would soon be followed by chaos.
Ravindra Jadeja, who had not bowled until that point, was introduced into the attack and struck with his very first delivery, as Shanto attempted a risky reverse sweep but ended up getting bowled.
This breakthrough opened the floodgates, with Jadeja then claiming Litton Das, who edged a brilliant delivery behind, while Shakib Al Hasan offered a simple return catch.
Shadman soon fell after reaching his fifty, playing a loose shot against the relentless Akash Deep.
From 91/3, Bangladesh found themselves reeling at 94/7, with India firing on all cylinders.
Bumrah quickly dispatched the tail, taking out Mehidy Hasan and Taijul Islam in quick succession.
Rahim managed to delay the inevitable for a time by keeping the strike with last man Khaled Ahmed.
With the ninth wicket falling just before the scheduled lunch break, the session was extended by a maximum of 30 minutes.
Rahim chipped away at the runs, appearing poised to see the session out unscathed, only to be undone by a moment of Bumrah brilliance.
With the final delivery of the session, India’s pace spearhead unleashed his signature off-cutter, which gripped the pitch and bowled Rahim, who misjudged the delivery while attempting an ambitious drive.
This was a fitting conclusion to the session, putting India in a commanding position to finalize their victory.
