On a dramatic Day 2 in Chennai, where 17 wickets fell — the most in a single day at this venue — Jasprit Bumrah’s four-wicket haul spearheaded a strong Indian bowling display, dismissing Bangladesh for just 149 after India was bowled out earlier for 376.
Despite losing early wickets in their second innings, India remained firmly in control of the first Test, ending the day at 81/3 with a commanding lead of 308 runs.
Bangladesh’s innings began with early setbacks after wrapping up India’s tail quickly.
Bumrah, switching to bowling around the wicket, bowled Shadman Islam for 2 as he left a delivery that nipped back in.
Zakir Hasan narrowly escaped dismissal when India opted not to review a Mohammed Siraj appeal, which later replays confirmed would have been out.
After three-over spells from Bumrah and Siraj, Akash Deep and R Ashwin were brought into the attack, and Akash immediately made an impact by bowling both Zakir and Mominul Haque in consecutive deliveries, leaving Bangladesh reeling at 22/3.
Najmul Hossain Shanto, who had shown some promise, was dismissed shortly after lunch, edging Siraj to second slip.
Bumrah then dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim with a delivery that moved away late, reducing Bangladesh to 40/5.
Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das briefly steadied the innings with a 50-run partnership, initially batting cautiously before opening up and hitting eight boundaries.
However, Ravindra Jadeja broke through, removing both players to put India back on top.
Despite a few boundaries from Hasan Mahmud and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Bumrah dismissed Mahmud just before tea, leaving Bangladesh eight down.
Mehidy and Taskin Ahmed frustrated India with an 18-run partnership, but Bumrah finally bowled Taskin with a well-executed yorker.
Mehidy, trying to manage the strike with last man Nahid Rana, hit Ashwin for a six and Rana contributed with a couple of boundaries.
However, Siraj returned to bowl Rana, giving India a substantial 227-run first-innings lead.
In their second innings, India started positively, with Yashasvi Jaiswal hitting two boundaries in the opening over off Taskin Ahmed, while Rohit Sharma got off the mark with a four off Hasan Mahmud.
However, Taskin struck back, dismissing the Indian captain with a delivery that moved away late, catching the edge.
Jaiswal followed soon after, edging Nahid Rana to the wicketkeeper.
Shubman Gill played a few elegant strokes, supported by Virat Kohli, who pulled a fine shot off Mehidy Hasan Miraz before being trapped lbw while trying to flick a full delivery.
Kohli opted not to review, though replays showed an inside edge.
Rishabh Pant came in and hit a boundary and a six off Shakib, extending India’s lead past 300, with Pant and Gill unbeaten as the day ended.
Earlier, India’s innings was wrapped up quickly on Day 2, adding only 37 runs to their overnight total.
Taskin Ahmed claimed three wickets in quick succession, while Hasan Mahmud became the first Bangladesh pacer to take a five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
India’s lower order had impressed on Day 1, led by R Ashwin’s brilliant 113 and Ravindra Jadeja’s 86, as they added 232 runs for the last four wickets, recovering from 144/6.
Taskin started the day by dismissing Jadeja for his overnight score of 86, and Mahmud soon removed Ashwin for 113, ending India’s innings at 376 after Bumrah became Mahmud’s fifth victim.
