England have omitted Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, and Chris Jordan from their white-ball squads for the upcoming series against Australia.

All three players were part of England’s T20 World Cup squad, which reached the semifinals before losing to India.

Their exclusion opens the door for five uncapped players in the T20I squad—Jordan Cox, Jacob Bethell, Dan Mousley, Josh Hull, and John Turner—each of whom has excelled in the domestic circuit.

England’s regular white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, and premier pacer, Jofra Archer, will also return to action.

Buttler has fully recovered from the calf injury that sidelined him during The Hundred, while Archer, whose workload was carefully managed during his time with Southern Brave, is set to play his first ODI since March 2023.

Cox’s selection is arguably the most predictable, given his dynamic presence at the top of the order as a wicketkeeper-batter.

He has been a standout performer in England’s domestic white-ball competitions, excelling in both the T20 Blast and The Hundred.

Josh Hull’s left-arm angle and ability to hit the deck hard provide an X-factor, while John Turner has caught attention with his pace and relentless energy during The Hundred.

Jacob Bethell and Dan Mousley have proven to be reliable all-rounders, with batting being their stronger suit.

Their inclusion highlights England’s ongoing preference for versatile cricketers in the shorter formats.

Harry Brook, Matthew Potts, Gus Atkinson, and Jamie Smith, all currently involved in the Test series against Sri Lanka, will only participate in the ODIs, as the T20I series against Australia is set to begin just a day after the Test series concludes.

Mark Wood, who suffered a thigh injury during the first Test against Sri Lanka, and Ben Stokes, sidelined for the summer with a hamstring tear, were unavailable for selection.

Additionally, Joe Root has been rested for the ODI squad.

The fierce rivalry will resume with a three-match T20I series starting on September 11, followed by five ODIs, which will be vital preparation for the Champions Trophy.

Marcus Trescothick will step in as interim coach for the series following England’s decision to part ways with Matthew Mott.
