Andrew McDonald, head coach of the Australian Men’s cricket team, has been granted a contract extension through the end of 2027, as announced by Cricket Australia on Wednesday.
Since taking over in 2022, McDonald has led Australia to victory in the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup in 2023, positioning the team as No. 1 in Tests and No. 2 in ODIs and T20s.
With this extension, McDonald will guide the team through the upcoming World Test Championship cycle, defend their ODI World Cup title in 2027, and compete in the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup and next year’s Champions Trophy.
CA’s CEO Nick Hockley praised McDonald, stating: “Andrew has proven to be an outstanding men’s head coach who, alongside delivering exceptional results, has built a strong coaching team and created an excellent environment for peak performance.
We are delighted to extend his tenure for another two years.”
Hockley added, “This extension allows Andrew to lead the team through the next World Test Championship, World Cup defense, and T20 World Cup.
The upcoming period includes an unprecedented 13 months of Test cricket in 2026-27, featuring away series against India and England, as well as the 150th anniversary Test at the MCG.”
McDonald expressed gratitude for his team, saying, “I am fortunate to have an exceptional group of leaders, players, coaches, and staff who are dedicated to the well-being, success, and development of this team.”
He emphasized, “The professionalism, commitment, and experience of my fellow coaches and the broader staff have made this journey incredibly successful while fostering a culture of unity, trust, and inclusivity.”
Reflecting on the challenges of international cricket, McDonald noted, “I am particularly proud of how the entire group—players and staff—has navigated these challenges together.”
