Despite the wicket, Afghanistan made steady progress as Afsar Zazai joined Shahidi, and the duo added a half-century stand to bring Afghanistan past 500.

Shahidi surpassed 150 for the second time in his Test career, looking set to score his second double century.

Meanwhile, Zazai struck three boundaries and even hit a six off Sean Williams, reaching 46 not out as Afghanistan went into lunch at 507/3.

Shahidi added eight more runs after the break, but with rain pouring down heavily, only two overs were bowled before play was halted for the day, with the umpires calling it off.
