Afghanistan will host South Africa for a three-match ODI series in Sharjah
Afghanistan will host South Africa for a three-match ODI series in Sharjah starting September 18, as confirmed by both boards in a joint media release on Wednesday (July 31).
This series will be the first bilateral ODI series between the two teams and will serve as preparation for next year’s Champions Trophy.
South Africa and Afghanistan have faced each other only twice in ODIs, during the 2019 and 2023 World Cups.
The teams also recently met in the semifinals of the 2024 T20 World Cup in Trinidad.
“These fixtures were not originally part of our FTP.
However, after productive discussions with Cricket South Africa, we agreed to host the Proteas for an ODI series in September.
South Africa is a formidable team, and we are excited about hosting them and developing a regular fixture in the future,” said ACB Chairman Mirwais Ashraf.
CSA Chairman Lawson Naidoo commented, “We are thrilled to embark on this historic ODI series with Afghanistan, who have proven to be a competitive team through their recent performances in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
This series represents a significant step forward in our cricketing relationship, and we anticipate a competitive and engaging contest.”
