Aaqib Javed, the former Pakistan pacer, has been appointed as the interim white-ball coach of the Pakistan men’s team until the conclusion of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Javed, who currently serves as the chief selector of the national team, will combine both roles until the end of the prestigious tournament.
In the past year, Javed will become the fifth individual to take charge of Pakistan’s white-ball coaching role.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Monday that it will begin the recruitment process for a permanent white-ball coach, aiming to make the appointment before the ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled from February 19 to March 9, 2025.
The white-ball coaching position was vacated by Gary Kirsten, who never led the team in an ODI, and was temporarily filled by Jason Gillespie, the team’s red-ball coach.
Under Gillespie’s temporary stewardship, Pakistan secured a series win in the ODI leg of their tour to Australia.
With a packed schedule leading up to the Champions Trophy, Javed will oversee Pakistan’s campaigns against Zimbabwe, which includes three ODIs and three T20Is in Zimbabwe, followed by three white-ball matches in South Africa.
The team will also participate in a triangular home series involving New Zealand and South Africa.
